Ragnarok quer dizer “Perdição dos Deuses”. Também pode ser chamado pelo nome de “Gotterdammerung” e o que significa realmente é o fim da cosmología na mitologia Nórdica. É precedido por Fimbulvetr, o inverno dos invernos. Existirão três invernos assim que se seguirão uns aos outros, sem haver verões entre eles. Todo o tipo de conflitos e disputas irão começar a acontecer, mesmo dentro das famílias, e toda a moralidade desaparecerá, é o início do fim.
Em seguida, o lobo Skoll devorará o sol e o seu irmão Hati fará o mesmo à lua, fazendo com que a Terra escureça completamente. As estrelas desaparecerão do céu. O galo Fjalar crocitará para os gigantes e o galo dourado Gullinkambi crocitará para os deuses. Um terceiro galo fará erguer os mortos.
A terra abanará com os terramotos e cada cadeia que exista rebentará, libertando assim o terrível lobo Fenrir. O mar recuará porque Jormungand, a serpente de Midgard, está a girar e enfurecida à medida que avança pela terra dentro. Com cada respirar, Jormungand vai manchar a terra e o céu com o seu veneno. As ondas causadas pela emersão da serpente vão soltar o navio Naglfar, que trará os gigantes até ao terreno de batalha, sendo o Naglfar comandado pelo gigante Hymir. Desde o reino dos mortos um segundo barco sairá, transportando os habitantes do inferno, com Loki como comandante. Os gigantes de fogo, guiados pelo gigante Surt, partirão desde Muspell no sul para juntar-se na guerra contra os deuses. Surt levará consigo uma espada que queima como o próprio sol e assim queimará a terra.
Entretanto, Heimdall fará soar a sua corneta, chamando os filhos de Odin e os heróis para o campo de batalha. Desde os quatro cantos do mundo, deuses, gigantes, anões, demónios e elfos irão dirigir-se até ao enorme planalto de Vigrid – que quer dizer “agitador de batalha” – onde a última luta será travada. Odin vai combater directamente contra Fenrir e Thor irá atacar Jormungand. Este último vencerá, mas o veneno da serpente gradualmente o irá consumir e matar. Surt procurará o desarmado Freyr, que é presa fácil para o gigante e perecerá. Tyr irá lutar contra o cão monstruoso Garm e morrerão os dois nessa luta. Dois arquetípicos inimigos, Loki e Heimdall, vão encontrar-se por uma última vez e nenhum sobrevivirá para contar a história. A disputa entre Odin e Fenrir irá durar bastante tempo, mas finalmente Fenrir cercará Odin e o engolirá. O filho de Odin, Vidar, conseguirá vingança pela morte do seu pai, matando o feroz lobo, mesmo desarmado, separando as mandíbulas completamente.
Depois Surt irá lançar fogo em todas as direcções, acabando por atingir Yggdrasil. O que faz com que os nove mundos ardam todos e quer amigos quer inimigos perecerão todos. A terra se afundará no mar.
Fazendo uma espécie de balanço, depois da destruição final, um novo e idilico mundo irá emergir do mar e será recheado com provisões abundantes. Alguns dos deuses sobrevivirão, outros renascerão. A miséria e a maldade não existirão nesses momentos e os deuses e os homens vivirão felizes juntos. Os descendentes de Lif e Lifthrasir habitarão a terra.
La mitologia nórdica tiene una historia para el final de la cosmologia, se dice Ragnarok. Ragnarok significa “Pérdida de los dioses” y tambien es denominado por “Gotterdammerung”.
Todo empieza por Fimbulvetr, que es el invierno de los inviernos. Se sucederan tres inviernos consecutivos, sin veranos entre ellos. Los conflictos y las guerras, mismo dentro de cada familia, comenzaran a ocurrir, existiendo a partir de ese momento un mundo sin moralidad, asi empieza el final.

La tierra tiemblara con los terremotos y cada cadena que exista se rompera, libertando entonces el terrible lobo Fenrir. El mar va a retroceder porque Jormungand, la serpiente de Midgard, ira rotando y furiosa a la vez que avanza tierra adentro, su respiración manchara el suelo y el cielo con el veneno que posee. Su emersion va a hacer con que el navio Naglfar se suelte. Este navio traera los gigantes hasta el campo de batalla y su comandante es el gigante Hymir. Desde el reino de los muertos saldra un segundo navio, en el cual iran los habitantes del infierno, comandados por Loki. Los gigantes de fuego, teniendo como guia el gigante Surt, viajaran desde Muspell en el sur para añadir su ejercito contra los dioses en la batalla final. Surt tendra consigo una espada que quema como el sol y con ella quemara la tierra.
Mientras tanto, en el lado de los “buenos”, Heimdall ira tocar su cuerno, llamando los hijos de Odin y los heroes para el campo de batalla. Desde los lugares mas lejanos del mundo, dioses, gigantes, enanos, demonios y elfos vendran hasta el llano campo de Vigrid – que quiere decir “agitador de batalla” – donde la ultima guerra sera luchada.
Odin luchara directamente contra Fenrir, mientras Thor va a atacar Jormungand. Thor ganara, pero el veneno de la serpiente poco a poco lo va debilitando y matando. Surt ira en busqueda de Freyr, que estando sin armas, es una presa facil y es aniquilado por el gigante. Tyr luchara contra el perro de los infiernos Garm y los dos moriran en esa lucha. Loki y Heimdall, dos viejos enemigos, se encuentran por una ultima vez, visto que se matan uno al otro. La mas complicada disputa es la de Odin y Fenrir, pero al final Fenrir consigue engullir a Odin. Vidar, el hijo de Odin, conseguira su revancha después, matando al lobo, mismo sin armas, destrozando sus mandibulas.
Viendo eso, el gigante Surt lanzara fuego en todas las direcciones, que acaba por llegar a Yggdrasil, la arbol de los nueve mundos. Eses nueve mundos terminan por quemar por completo y toda la gente contenida en ellos morira. La tierra se hundira en el mar.
Pero por lo que parece la historia tiene un final feliz, después de toda esa tragedia. Un nuevo y onirico mundo saldra del mar y sera relleno con provisiones en gran cantidad. Algunos de los dioses conseguiran sobrevivir, otros van a nacer de nuevo. La miseria y el malo carácter no van a existir en esa epoca y los dioses y los hombres podran de nuevo vivir juntos. Quien va a habitar la tierra seran los descendientes de Lif y Lifthrasir.
“Ragnarok ("Doom of the Gods"), also called Gotterdammerung, means the end of the cosmos in Norse mythology. It will be preceded by Fimbulvetr, the winter of winters. Three such winters will follow each other with no summers in between. Conflicts and feuds will break out, even between families, and all morality will disappear. This is the beginning of the end.
The wolf Skoll will finally devour the sun, and his brother Hati will eat the moon, plunging the earth [into] darkness. The stars will vanish from the sky. The cock Fjalar will crow to the giants and the golden cock Gullinkambi will crow to the gods. A third cock will raise the dead.
The earth will shudder with earthquakes, and every bond and fetter will burst, freeing the terrible wolf Fenrir. The sea will rear up because Jormungand, the Midgard Serpent, is twisting and writhing in fury as he makes his way toward the land. With every breath, Jormungand will stain the soil and the sky with his poison. The waves caused by the serpent's emerging will set free the ship Naglfar, and with the giant Hymir as their commander, the giants will sail towards the battlefield. From the realm of the dead a second ship will set sail, and this ship carries the inhabitants of hell, with Loki as their helmsman. The fire giants, led by the giant Surt, will leave Muspell in the south to join against the gods. Surt, carrying a sword that blazes like the sun itself, will scorch the earth.
Meanwhile, Heimdall will sound his horn, calling the sons of Odin and the heroes to the battlefield. From all the corners of the world, gods, giants, dwarves, demons and elves will ride towards the huge plain of Vigrid ("battle shaker") where the last battle will be fought. Odin will engage Fenrir in battle, and Thor will attack Jormungand. Thor will victorious, but the serpent's poison will gradually kill the god of thunder. Surt will seek out the swordless Freyr, who will quickly succumb to the giant. The one-handed Tyr will fight the monstrous hound Garm and they will kill each other. Loki and Heimdall, age-old enemies, will meet for a final time, and neither will survive their encounter. The fight between Odin and Fenrir will rage for a long time, but finally Fenrir will seize Odin and swallow him. Odin's son Vidar will at once leap towards the wolf and kill him with his bare hands, ripping the wolf's jaws apart.
Then Surt will fling fire in every direction. The nine worlds will burn, and friends and foes alike will perish. The earth will sink into the sea.
After the destruction, a new and idyllic world will arise from the sea and will be filled with abundant supplies. Some of the gods will survive, others will be reborn. Wickedness and misery will no longer exist and gods and men will live happily together. The descendants of Lif and Lifthrasir will inhabit this earth.”
